Mulch / Woodchip
-
- Organic (Biodegradable): Made from natural plant or animal matter that breaks down over time, enriching the soil structure and releasing slow nutrients. Examples include garden compost, leaf mould, bark chippings, well-rotted horse manure, wood chips, and straw.
- Inorganic (Non-Biodegradable): Made from stones, minerals, or synthetic sheets that block weeds and hold moisture without feeding the soil. Examples include slate chippings, gravel, pebbles, shingle, and permeable landscape fabrics.
Key Benefits
-
- Weed suppression: Blocks sunlight so weed seeds cannot germinate.
- Moisture retention: Reduces water evaporation from the soil during dry spells.
- Temperature insulation: Protects plant roots from summer heat and winter frost.
- Soil health: Organic varieties attract earthworms and beneficial organisms that improve heavy clay or sandy soils.
How to Apply
- Timing: Best applied in mid-to-late spring or autumn on moist, weed-free, and unfrozen soil.
- Depth: Lay a 5cm to 7.5cm (2in to 3in) layer.
- Placement: Keep a small gap (about 1cm) around woody plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot and disease.
